The Invoking The Pause Advisory Committee met recently to select grant partners for the 2017 grant cycle from a pool of over 40 applicants. The proposals came from scientists and artists, activists and actors. As we reviewed the requests, we were inspired by the creativity and quality of the collaborations seeking climate challenge solutions across so many different disciplines. This year, we selected 8 extraordinary projects to receive Invoking The Pause support.

We have also additionally funded 6 previous projects with a "Seeding Possibilities" grant to help take them to the next level.

Invoking the Pause  (“ITP”) experienced spring a little early this year as we read through the applications from budding collaborations and seeds of creative solutions for climate change. We received 16 proposals this year, and from those we selected 5 grant partners that best fit the spirit of the "Pause" and show promising solutions to address some aspect of climate change. While we were unable to fund all of the worthy proposals that we received, we were heartened by each and every one of the efforts we read about.

At our recent Invoking the Pause Grant Partner Gathering, 16 groups of Grant Partners (28 people) came together to share stories of their respective "Pauses", build connections, and collectively brainstorm on future pathways for their work. One theme that resonated throughout the day was the idea that careful attention to the “process, or how we go about creating change”, is essential if we are to unearth new solutions to the challenges facing our planet.

We received a record number of applications this year, and definitely had our work cut out for us deciding how to allocate funds among a highly qualified pool of applicants. After a lively discussion and some tough decisions, our Advisory Committee selected five partners to receive Invoking the Pause grants:

2014 has barely begun, and already it’s full of excitement for Invoking the Pause and our community of partners! We received 36 applications for grants—32 for Invoking the Pause grants from first-time applicants, and four from previous grant partners taking their collaborations in new directions via the Seeding Possibilities program.

Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) is an international alliance that works both against incinerators and for safe, sustainable and just alternatives.  Ananda Tan is GAIA's U.S. and Canada Regional Coordinator and he was recently interviewed by ITP.

In reflecting back on our ITP Grant Partner Gathering of a few weeks ago, I am struck by the dynamism of bringing such creative people together for an entire day to learn from each other, to share, and to brainstorm together.  One of the Grant Partners, Joshua Fouts, Executive Director of Science House Foundation, was most inspired by:  "… the collaborative energy and synergy created between the people and ideas that Maggie has curated, invested in and convened in this community that we are building."  He was struck with a sense of wonder at being part of an art project - the sculpture and scaffolding of creative ideas built around my vision.
