seeds_of_resistance.jpgITP Grant Partner and investigative journalist, Mark Schapiro, has a new website and blog to write and report on the health of our food system—starting with the ground zero ingredient, seeds. His site, birthed from his new book "Seeds of Resistance", is a place to continue exploring issues around seeds--climate--political/economic influences on agriculture, and of course the movement that is rapidly expanding to defy the industrial model. Here’s installment one (new blog): www.seedsofresistance.net. Hope you find it of interest.
IMG_3924.jpgWe did it! Our 8th Annual ITP Grant Partner Gathering wrapped up on October 31st with great reviews, warm connections and some potential new collaborations.  As our own Kelly McVicker shared during her engaging Kombucha Fermentation exercise, the creation of new cultures created by a diverse mix of ingredients and people proved a powerful metaphor for the two-and-a-half-day retreat.

Once again held at the beautiful Westerbeke Ranch, the days were interspersed with presentations from grant partners, allies and special guests including Ras k'Dee, who opened the Gathering with a powerful Pomo Blessing. Our commitment to creating a group "pause-like" experience included a Forest Therapy Walk, morning movement sessions, wine and cheese gatherings each evening, and being enveloped in the warm ambiance of the Westerbeke Ranch.  » Read More

GCAS_.jpgIn the spirit of aligning healthy ecological and human systems, Climate Solutions Group and Invoking the Pause (ITP) sponsored the Climate Summit Speaker Series at the Presidio Officers Club in San Francisco in conjunction with Governor Jerry Brown's September 2018, Global Climate Action Summit

Responses to the challenges of climate disruption must begin with imaginative changes in our agriculture and food production systems in order to align human practices with living ecological systems. Among the most enduring of human enterprises has been the cultivation of food through biological resources based on abundant and fertile soil, plentiful surface water and a balanced and healthy atmosphere. However, the predominant model we might label as "big ag," typically ignores ecological systems interactions and attempts to substitute human industrial inputs for natural dynamic processes.

It was a homecoming of sorts for TIMBY in October. Over four sunny days in Nairobi's national park, our team's lead technologists, advisory board, project management and Kenyan users came together for the first time in years thanks to funding from Invoking the Pause.

I know it sounds strange that some of our team - having worked together for years - had never met in person (or hadn't met for years). The developers, especially, rarely have the opportunity to have face-to-face conversation with our users (since our users are distributed in countries around the world). But this type of thing is becoming increasingly common in the world of distributed teams. » Read More

As You Sow Takes a True Pause

image006.jpgWe have completed our Pause, with much gratitude to Maggie Kaplan and Invoking the Pause.

As You Sow:  We are the nation's leading non-profit practitioner of shareholder advocacy. Corporations are responsible for most of the pressing social and environmental problems we face today — we believe corporations must be part of the solutions. We know shareholders to be a powerful force for creating positive, lasting change in corporate behavior. We use that power, to create that change.

Our Pause: After working productively and joyously with ITP through several grants, this year we applied for a literal Pause. We had found ourselves particularly drawn to Invoking the Pause's governing idea - a creative pause - a reflective retreat - an intentional break from daily routines in a place of natural beauty, to reflect upon and think more deeply about some aspect of the climate challenges we are confronting.  » Read More

Rise_for_Climate_Justice_close_up.jpgOn the eve of the Global Climate Action Summit, environmental advocates, youth, local community leaders and Indigenous people from around the world converged at Crissy Field, under the iconic Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. Together, participants created a large-scale aerial art image as they were immersed into an avant-garde musical journey.

The experience was meant to convey that honoring Indigenous Rights by Standing for Climate Justice is key to a truly 100% Renewable Energy Future.

artist_and_climate_change_logo.pngFor five years, the Artists & Climate Change blog (A&CC), an initiative of The Arctic Cycle, has been publishing essays, interviews, and editorials, contributing to an international artist network and promoting the inclusion of the arts in the global climate change conversation. We feature visual and performing artists, including painters, musicians, theatremakers and dancers, and artists from other disciplines who are committed to engaging with climate change in their work. We deeply believe that what artists have to say about climate change will shape our values and behaviors for years to come. For that reason, we are committed to supporting them and giving them the visibility they need to create significant impact. » Read More
